The Refugees

Ahmad, Soraya and their children are Syrian refugees, living in a big block of flats on the outskirts of Kuala Lumpur. The family are one of around 180,000 refugees who have made Malaysia their home - for now. But while they have found safety from ISIS-related violence back home, their journey hasn’t ended yet. Malaysia currently has no legal framework that recognizes the status of refugees, and addresses their specific protection needs. As older parents, Ahmad and Soraya are anxious about the future of their young children. ExtremeLives spoke to this family about why they left Damascus, and the challenges they still face ahead.
